GLP-1 Medications: Is There a Link to Improved Fertility?

June 2, 2025

GLP-1 medications are a hot topic across the health industry as the health benefits are on the rise. Studies show that individuals utilizing GLP-1 medications are seeing improvements in cardiovascular health, mental health, improved neurocognitive function, and even improved fertility.

Dr. Kelly Mosher, board-eligible obstetrician and gynecologist, explains the science behind use of these medications.

What is a GLP-1 Medication?

Medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro have grown rapidly in popularity to aid individuals for weight loss and to treat diabetes. While these are the primary uses of these medications some see them as an infertility cure. However, we know that is not the full story. While it is true that there have been improvements in fertility status amongst women who take these medications it is not a cure for infertility.

How do GLP-1s Support Fertility?

There are a few different reasons these medications are believed to support fertility health. Weight loss is a substantial reason. A weight loss of even 5% can affect ovulation and menstrual changes by regulating hormones.

Some OBGYN’s may use these medications as an additional treatment option in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). GLP-1s can help with weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce androgens (male hormones). These all work to improve hormonal imbalances and enhance spontaneous ovulation and increase fertility. While GLPs are not intended to treat PCOS specifically, they are increasingly considered under close medical supervision.

Inflammation can be a contributing factor to infertility. A common improvement amongst individuals taking GLP-1s is inflammation reduction, this improves metabolic health which can support reproductive function overall.

What GLP-1s Can’t Do…

At this point it may seem like there is nothing this medication can’t do! Well, there are some contributing factors to infertility that can not be fixed or treated through GLP-1s.

Sometimes infertility is caused by other factors, such as blocked tubes, fibroids, low sperm count, etc. GLP-1s have no impact on these causes of infertility and these abnormalities need to be treated specifically.

GLP-1s cannot replace fertility treatments. Fertility treatments such as IVF or IUI are well established treatments for infertility. Infertility is not a one size fits all and often GLP-1s are used in addition to other fertility treatments.

It is not recommended that someone who is actively pregnant or trying to conceive use GLP-1s. There is not enough evidence or research about the effects of this medication during pregnancy.

Common Misconceptions

While GLP-1 medications are helpful they are not the magic solution. Similarly, weight loss does not always mean someone will be able to conceive. Each person is different. The best results for treating infertility come from a personalized, medically guided plan.

GLP-1s are not a cure for Infertility

Ultimately, these medications are a helpful tool! Research shows that the benefits are exponentially higher than weight loss alone. When it comes to infertility, the results are just one piece of the puzzle.
