Oral Medications

Clomid and Letrozole are oral medications often used for women who do not ovulate normally. These oral medications function to help women ovulate and / or to enhance fertility by facilitating the development (followed by ovulation) of more than one egg; in a normal menstrual cycle, a single egg is usually produced and ovulated.

Side effects may include but are not limited to mild headache, mood swings, vaginal dryness, ovarian cysts, and visual disturbances. It is also important to note that these medications increase your risk of multiple gestations - patients who achieve pregnancy with oral medication have an approximately 5-10% risk of having multiples.

A variety of treatment protocols exist for the use of these medications but in general, they are taken for 5 days early in the menstrual cycle followed by an ultrasound to monitor your response and then combined with an intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Some patients may not develop an egg or fail to achieve pregnancy with oral fertility medications. If you do not respond to oral medications or you are not pregnant after 3 treatment cycles, please contact our office for a consultation with Dr. Riggs.
