Fertility treatments can be physically and emotionally demanding. Whether you’re trying to conceive (TTC) naturally, or undergoing assisted reproductive treatments like IVF or IUI, maintaining a balanced lifestyle can support your body and increase your chances of a successful outcome.
Katie Leighton, RN, shares supportive lifestyle and exercise guidance tailored for women TTC or navigating fertility treatments. Here’s how you can nurture your body during this important time.

The Connection Between Lifestyle and Fertility
Your overall well-being plays a critical role in reproductive health. Lifestyle factors such as stress, diet, physical activity, and sleep influence hormonal balance and the body’s readiness for conception.
Even subtle changes to your routine can have a meaningful impact on your fertility treatment outcomes.
Exercise: What’s Safe and Supportive?
Before beginning or continuing any exercise routine during fertility treatment, consult your fertility specialist. Everyone’s needs are unique, and safety depends on your specific protocol, medical history, and how your body responds to medication.
Engaging in high-intensity exercise, experiencing chronic stress, eating a diet high in processed sugars, or having an inconsistent sleep schedule can elevate cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol has been linked to disrupted menstrual cycles and potentially reduced success rates in fertility treatments.
While you can’t eliminate all sources of stress, you can control how you care for your body.

Supportive, Gentle Movement Options:
- Walking – Promotes circulation and reduces stress without strain
- Yoga (Restorative or Fertility-Focused) – Encourages relaxation and pelvic opening
- Swimming – Full-body, low-impact movement
- Strength Training (with light weights) – Maintains tone and stability when approved by your doctor
Exercises to Avoid During Treatment (unless otherwise advised):
- High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
- Heavy lifting
- Long-distance running or high-impact cardio
- Hot yoga or infrared saunas (due to overheating risks)
Nutrition and Daily Habits to Support Fertility
Whole foods fuel your body and support reproductive health. Focus on:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Lean proteins (chicken, fish, tofu, legumes)
- Whole grains (quinoa, oats, brown rice)
- Healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, nuts, seeds)
Hydration is also key. Water supports all bodily functions, including blood flow, hormone transport, and temperature regulation.
Important Nutrients to Prioritize:
- Folate – Found in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified grains
- Omega-3 fatty acids – Found in salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds
- Antioxidants – Found in berries, citrus fruits, and green tea
- Iron – Found in lean meats, spinach, and beans
Limiting or avoiding alcohol and caffeine during treatment is generally recommended but always follow your doctor’s specific guidance.

Acupuncture: Holistic Aid in Fertility
Acupuncture is the process of inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. It is believed in Traditional Chinese Medicine that this practice improves energy flow, reduce stress, and support reproductive health. Many fertility specialists support acupuncture as part of holistic care. How acupuncture may help:
- Enhances blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
- Supports hormonal balance
- May improve ovarian response and egg quality
- Helps reduce anxiety and promote relaxation
- Can support implantation and reduce uterine contractions post-embryo transfer
Choose a licensed acupuncturist with expertise in fertility, and keep our reproductive endocrinologist informed so your care can remain well-coordinated.
Listening to Your Body
You know your body best. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and speak with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your routine. What works for one person may not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay.
Fertility is not one-size-fits-all. Every patient deserves a personalized, compassionate approach.
You are doing the best you can, and that’s more than enough. If you’re ready to take the next step, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
